Standard Garage Door Sizes Popular Among Homeowners
What Is a Standard Size Garage Door Size?
We recommend a width of either 7’6” or 8’0” for a single garage door and 16’0” for a double garage door if you are building a new garage. However, a 16’0” wide door cannot be a traditional Up and Over door because it is too wide.
Standard Size of a Single Garage Door
Single garage doors are usually 8′ x 7′, 8′ x 8′, 9′ x 7′, or 9′ x 8′. Their height ranges from 7 to 8 feet, and their width ranges from 8 to 10 feet. A standard single garage door is usually about 2100mm high and 2400mm wide, which fits an average-sized car.
Average Size of a Double Garage Door
Double garage doors are typically 16′ x 7′, but they can vary in height from 7 to 8 feet and in width from 12 to 20 feet. Custom sizes are also available, as well as large garage doors for triple car garages.
Standard Garage Door Sizes According to Garage Door Type
There are different types of garage doors available. Therefore, their standard sizes can also vary.
-
Up and Over Doors
We recommend a width of 7’6” or 8’0” for single garages and 14’0” for double garages. This is the maximum width for most Up and Over doors; for wider doors, you should consider Sectional doors. These measurements refer to the inside dimensions of the fixing subframe, so account for this.
Heights are generally 6’6” or 7’0”, with a head section for the subframe on top of the door size to consider.
-
Sectional Doors
Sectional garage doors come in many standard sizes, typically in 6” increments in width, starting at 7’0” wide. Standard heights are usually 6’6” and 7’0”, but manufacturers offer more height options. Since most garage openings are around 2200mm high, the 7’0” height (2134mm) often requires an infill. Choose doors that maximize the opening width and height, fitting closer to the lintel height as a standard size.
-
Side Hinged Doors
Side-hinged garage doors are available in many standard sizes. Check overall sizes, including the fixing subframe, to get exact dimensions. Common sizes are 7’ x 6’6” and 7’ x 7’, with a 50-70mm outer subframe added all around.
-
Roller Garage Doors
Most of the roller garage doors are made to measure with no extra cost, so order to exact millimeters.
-
Timber and Steel Subframes
The exact sizes differ between timber and steel subframes. For timber subframes, the internal dimensions of 7’0” x 7’0” are exact, ensuring the door panel fits correctly. For steel subframes, the internal dimensions are about 10 mm smaller in width. Steel frames are always factory-fitted on single Up and Over garage doors, so they come as a complete unit.
How to Measure a Garage Door Size?
To measure a garage door, use measuring tape from one end to the other. To get the width, avoid any hardware like rollers, hinges, or support struts. For the height, measure from the bottom to the top of the door without including the bottom retainer or support struts.
The door size doesn’t have to be a round number. If your door isn’t a standard size, you can either adjust a new door or order a custom-made one.
